Whew! :-) ...

Once upon a time there was a little girl that was conceived through love and creativity. Her Mother, while the child was in her womb, sang beautiful church and opera melodies all day and night.

Her Father worked long and hard and supported the family in the most loving way

.

Besides life, love and never ending faith, the gift of song that the Mom gave was so precious to her little baby girl. Her Mother's voice wrapped around her like a soft musical blanket, serenading her small body and soul with something so special that the child would carry it through the rest of her life. It was as if the child learned to absorb music in such a natrual way, it would forever feel like it was running through her veins.

I was that little girl, and the song that my Mom sang constantly was "Let There Be Peace On Earth" by Jill Jackson Miller. It was no surprise to anyone when somewhere around 2 years of age, on a trip to Canada and wearing a little pink and white dress (yes one of those dresses!), frilly little undies, ankle socks and the shiniest patent leather shoes you've ever seen, I crawled up onto a table top filled with pastries, and began singing that song to the crowd. Well...my Mother and Father after recovering from shock, started to cry and in their words "it began". The next event that took place was on a beautiful snowy Christmas morning in Washington, D.C., I received a toy piano for a present. You know the kind that if you play it long enough you can drive your whole family absolutely crazy? Well not only did I play it constantly and pretend to sing and compose songs, I also tied a string to it and proceed to drag it everywhere I went until my parents finally got me the real thing. A huge upright piano and a wonder of course to me because it seemed so huge and I was so little at the time. Hence the stool my Mom always had ready for me to step upon to get on the bench and start to play. That was their second signal that their daughter was destined to go the "musically creative" route in life. (smile)

Between school, singing, piano, acting and dancing lessons, life was amazing and fun. I studied at Sewell Music Conservatory for almost 15 years for voice and piano, and it was like my second home. My voice teacher (God rest his soul) was Isiah Lurry. Honey, he was a trip and probably the best thing that ever happened to me from a vocal point of view, besides my Mom serenading me as I was being formed inside her. I was so little and he was so tall when I first met him, the advice that he gave me was priceless. He said "My dear I'm going to teach you everything you need to know about your voice and how to use it, I want you to absorb all of this information, let your body memorize it, and then when you get onstage let it go." In other words he taught me freedom behind the microphone. Remembering all that's technical to maintain, but willing it to become a part of the natural flow of your soul, so when you sing, you don't have to think about anything but the pure joy of what you're doing. Sadly Mr. Isiah Lurry is not with us anymore on this earth, but I will never, ever forget that man and the love for music that he left as a precious gift for me.

My piano teacher was the beloved Gladys Sewell and all I remember was coming in and her having to help me up onto the piano bench, the metronome, (that darn metronome), the many classical pieces I learned to play, and my feet never touching the ground to reach the pedals unless I half stood and half sat on the bench. It was hilarious and quite heroic as she would often put it. Ms. Sewell was a stickler for perfection regarding the piano, and we often butted heads regarding playing freely by ear, as opposed to being taught classically and led gradually into other forms of music. Between musical theory and such it was quite an experience. I truly loved that woman since I'd known her all my life, and she cared about all of us so much. Sadly, Ms. Sewell passed away from double brain tumors, but before that she'd narrowed her students down to myself and one other person up until three weeks before she left this earth. She would limp in with a cane, a cast on her head after numerous surgeries, and blind almost in both eyes just to be there to teach until she could no longer. Such was her dedication and love to us that I'll always remember, admire, and respect her strength until the end. Talk about inspiration through observation. In between there I also studied at Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Md. for 2 years as well for further, advanced piano teachings. It's such an interesting challenge to combine all types of music learned technically, and leave room for the natural "playing or singing by ear" ability to get in there as well. It's been a life long argument amongst many musical scholars as to whether it's even possible. I'm here to say "OF COURSE IT IS!!!". (Yes I'm laughing completely out of control right now!!!)

Loving and living life through music in Washington, D.C, and Maryland was amazing for me. The opportunity soon came through to be flown to Sunny California through my late vocal teacher Isiah Lurry, and a certain movie studio called MGM. I found myself here in this strange, exiciting town called Los Angeles and the real story then began. One of the first people that I met was a man named Ramiro Fauve, and he was the first real musical duo, and gig I had in Los Angeles. He was also one of my first true friends. We met and formed a group called 1+1 and it was the perfect time to meet a gentle musical powerhouse like him, with me coming straight from D.C. via Virginia. It was as if God had placed us at the same place, at the same time and was watching out for us. I will forever be grateful that it was you Ramiro, that gently took my hand and led me further into the California world of music and song. Black, White and Brown my angels, Millie, Antoinette and everyone who was a part of that love and family, thanks girlfriends. It's a wonderful thing when you're born knowing what you want to do, knowing what makes your heart race with joy, and realizing exactly what your passion is regarding music. I can only wish that for everyone. To follow your dreams and do what makes your soul sing. Don't worry about how you'll get through, your faith and strength will get you through it. Waking up everyday and being able to do this has been a priceless part of my life. Thank you Mommy, Daddy, Valerie, (my gorgeous and so brillliant sister) and thank you

Ramiro Fauve. My gentle, talented
and always supportive friend.
